Pig iron

Melted iron produced in a blast furnace, containing a large quantity of carbon (above 1.5%). The pig iron is the intermediate product during the steelmaking process after smelting iron ore with a high-carbon fuel such as coke, usually with limestone as a flux. Pig iron can be transferred once it solidifies; many EAF furnaces buy pig iron on the open market as an input for their furnace.
